General mortgage bond
A bond secured by a property mortgage.
General partner
A partner who has unlimited liability for the obligations of the
partnership.
General partnership
A partnership arrangement in which all partners are general partners.
Gilt-edged
Securities from high-quality, blue chip companies are said to be
'gilt-edged.'
Gold standard
A monetary system in which currencies are defined in terms of their gold
content. The U.S. abandoned the gold standard in 1971.
Good delivery
A designation that a security meets all requirements to be transferred to
the buyer.
Good 'til canceled (GTC) or open order
A trading order that is good until the investor cancels it. Brokerages
usually set a limit of 30 to 60 days, after which the GTC expires if not
reinstated.
Government bonds
A high-grade debt instrument sold by the U.S. Government.
Gross domestic product (GDP)
Market value of goods and services produced over time including the income
of foreign corporations and foreign residents working in the U.S., but
excluding the income of U.S. residents and corporations overseas.
Gross national product (GNP)
Measure of an economy's total income. Equal to GDP plus income abroad
accruing to domestic residents minus income generated in domestic market
accruing to non-residents.
Gross profit margin
Gross profit divided by sales, which is equal to each sales dollar left
over after paying for the cost of good sold.
Growth stock
Stock of a company that is growing (earnings, revenue, etc.) faster than
its industry.
