The Retirement Decision

Many people spend less time planning for 25 years of retirement than they do a single vacation! One can begin by making the conscious decision about each of the four questions below.

Your answers to these four questions
will determine the quality of your retirement

Flowchart: Alternate Process: I will pay myself first.  What I save I won't spend.
Up-Down Arrow Callout: 1.
How much will you save and invest?
Flowchart: Alternate Process: The kitchen needs remodeling and I have my eye on a fishing boat.  I just can't afford to save any more right now.
Flowchart: Alternate Process: I will start now.  Time, not timing, is my strategy.
Up-Down Arrow Callout: 2.
How long will you let your money grow?
Flowchart: Alternate Process: I have too much going.  When things calm down I'll start putting more money away.  I mean, what's another year?

+   Flowchart: Alternate Process: I keep a good share of my money in stocks.  I don't time the market.  I see myself as a long-term owner of many quality businesses.
Up-Down Arrow Callout: 3.
What will you be investing in?
Flowchart: Alternate Process: I don't understand the stock market and I worry too much.  I'll keep my money in money markets and CDs.
+
Flowchart: Alternate Process: I stay disciplined.  I buy quality investments, broadly diversify, patiently hold and rebalance when necessary.
Up-Down Arrow Callout: 4.
How disciplined
will you be?
Flowchart: Alternate Process: I don't consider myself a great investor.  I follow what my friends are doing.

How are your fundamentals?
Making good investment decisions can have an enormous impact on your retirement. Consider this hypothetical example:
* If you saved $100 a month for 25 years at 6%, you would retire with $69,299 in your account.
* If, however, you saved $300 a month for 40 years at 6% the result would be $796,596 at retirement.        Your decisions count!

This is a hypothetical example of mathematical compounding and does not represent the performance of any specific investment product or class of investments.  Rate of return will vary over time, particularly for long-term investments.  The values shown do not reflect product fees, charges, or taxes which would reduce returns if included.  Investments offering the potential for higher rates of return also involve a higher degree of risk.  Actual results will vary.
